Prune Blossom Festival
I grew up in Healdsburg during the time when prunes reigned as the primary crop. As such, my childhood was influenced by the seasonal changes in the prune orchards. The orchards were so lovely every spring with the blossoms billowing throughout the countryside. Every August I spent my days waking up before dawn to begin picking prunes for as many hours as I could before it became too hot with the summer sun. I earned 25 cents for each box of prunes, which I saved to buy clothes for the new school year.
When I was in 3rd grade, I entered the city poster contest for the annual Prune Blossom Festival. I painted a picture of the billowing blossoms and I was pleased with my poster. It was selected as the winner and I won a prize (I think $25). My poster was displayed that year in town, and I was so very proud. Winning this contest was the first time I realized I could achieve a big goal.
